Unfiltered Journal Prompts

A few weeks ago I wrote about the importance of not filtering your journal. Sometimes it can be challenging to figure out what to write once you ditch the filter though. How do you get to the heart of what's on your mind? What will you say if you aren’t summarizing your day?


Here are 20 journal prompts to get you writing.


  1. What is my greatest fear? If it didn’t exist, what more could I accomplish?

  2. In 5 years, I want a typical day of mine to consist of…

  3. If I could change one thing about my life, what would it be?

  4. What was my best moment today? What was my worst?

  5. Today I expressed gratitude by…

  6. What are my values? How did I exemplify them through my actions today?

  7. When have I made a change in my  life? What did I do then that can help me be successful now?

  8. What aspects of my life allow me to feel fulfilled?

  9. What advice would you give to your teenage self?

  10. What is your biggest dream? Give lots of detail.

  11. My first thought this morning was…

  12. I am confident in my ability to…

  13. One worry I can put aside is…

  14. I said thank you to my body today by…

  15. What is the easiest change I could make?

  16. When did I show compassion to someone today?

  17. What would you like more of in your life? What would you like less of?

  18. Today I felt ___. What are some of the triggers that generated that feeling?

  19. What is the most likely outcome if I continue living life as I currently am?

  20. What is more important to me than meeting my goal?
